High Talent

Congratulations to Eric Wu (12F) who is a finalist in the Alpha Awards Photo Competition, having won a camera already for his photograph taken at the swimming carnival. Well done also to Nelson Cheng (11T) on his bronze medal in the Youth National Weightlifting Championships for the 67kg division.

Weeks 1 & 2 of Online Learning

There were some teething problems across the state on Tuesday last when a huge load was placed on networks as all the city’s school students logged in to receive online instruction. It was stressful for teachers and students as 0900 approached and many could not get on. We had numerous phone calls from students. The Big Blue Button on CANVAS malfunctioned for people using HP laptops offsite. My thanks go to James Rudd and David Isaacs who spent the first day troubleshooting and building work-around or alternative log on solutions to help staff connect with students. By Wednesday communication was working smoothly, and many video conferences were held with students. Some staff preferred using Zoom and sharing screens. By the end of the week systems had settled down and we fell into a better routine for maximising student learning in offsite mode. This week, systems have worked relatively smoothly, and very high numbers of conference calls were recorded. I want to congratulate and thank all staff involved in making the learning experience for our boys as ‘normal’ as possible by sticking to the usual timetable and maintaining the daily school routine, even if while still at home. My sense is that the lockdown will continue past the 31st of July. We need to be prepared for the possibility of an extended period in online learning mode. Individual Faculty Heads will make contingency plans to maximise learning opportunities and meet assessment commitments.

Parent -Teacher Night Years 8 & 10

The parents of students in Years 8 & 10 had the opportunity to discuss the progress of their sons with teachers on our Parent Teacher night held on Tuesday evening. Feedback on the evening has been positive. Jamie Kay provided the zoom accounts, parents and students name files and instructions for setting up zoom interviews. His administration and organisation for the event was instrumental in its success. I thank and congratulate him on his work. Thank you to all staff who stepped out once again into unchartered online territory and accomplished their tasks with professional efficiency.

Enrolments for 2022

Enrolment applications for 2022 closed on July 16. All the data have been entered by Maria Glenn and the SASS staff. The teams of Teacher Assessors have picked up their boxes for the first iteration of the assessment by three different Assessors. We hope to finish the process by the end of week 3 and I can start arranging interviews for short listed people. We are discussing what to do about the Placement Tests as it may be some time before prospective short-listed applicants are allowed on site to do the test.
