Values Education (Years 7 – 9)
The Values Education Course was introduced to address the need for students to have the opportunity to share information and views about a variety of issues relevant to teenagers and global citizens of the 21st Century. The course is divided into four major areas which include core modules, performance coaching, leadership and community service as well as media literacy. Each year group engages in a range of activities which focus on topics selected for either age, gender, leadership or community importance. The program provides a continuum of integrated study which links to a variety of whole school programs focusing on the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes which help students build resilience, confidence and motivation for the future. Teachers follow the program outline provided but may alter the format to meet the necessary levels of intellectual quality, significance and engagement specific to their group.
Senior Transition (Year 10)
The Senior Transition Course extends beyond the junior course by focusing on preparation for Preliminary and HSC study requirements and setting goals for the future. There are five major modules focusing on All My Own Work compulsory tutorials, community and work related skills, knowledge and understanding, human rights issues, career path identification and research, as well as a continuation of the performance coaching module in time management and study skills. Students are required to attend one session in each 2 week cycle and are given the opportunity to supplement this work with their own research and skill development on the alternate week. There is a very high expectation at this stage that students will use this time to develop their own leadership portfolio in order to fulfill the increasing demands and challenges of the SBHS Student Award Scheme and for future tertiary entrance applications.
