The role of the Year Adviser at Sydney Boys High School

In providing guidance for and promoting the welfare of students in the Year:

  • To support individual students through difficult times
  • To assist teachers understand the practical needs of individual students every year
  • To monitor trends in individual students relating to – academic progress, classroom behaviour, attendance, social behaviour, adjustment etc and to refer, where necessary to counsellor, Principal, Deputy Principal, Head Teacher Welfare etc
  • To disseminate appropriate information to school personnel regarding issues affecting students in the year
  • To initiate/develop/enhance programs that develop and promote group cohesion and identification [encourage and support camps, dances etc]
  • Initiate and organise cohort assemblies, liaise with guest speakers and SRC / Prefect organisers.
  • To support and a willingness to teach Values Education
  • To support and liaise with SRC
  • To support and participate in Peer Support training and Peer Mediation training and selection processes
  • To promote, organise [with assistance of Outdoor Education co-ordinator] and attend Camps.
  • To maintain a register of students with Special Needs and advise Head Teacher Welfare
  • Assist with Speech Night/ advise all prize winners

As the interface between home and school:

  • To provide the initial point of contact for parents
  • To provide liaison between parents and the school
  • To update information on Students with Special Needs every year

As a member of the School Welfare Team:

  • To participate in the development and implementation of school policy relating to Student Welfare]
  • To attend Welfare committee meetings and Year Adviser meetings
  • To provide liaison with the School Counsellor and be proactive in referring students of concern
  • To produce an annual review  [initiatives/concerns] to assist other year Advisers

As an Administrator:

  • To maintain certain records on RISC systems
  • Maintain a check on whole day absences and intervene where necessary
  • To produce reports using school based software
  • To assist with new enrolment procedures
  • To co-ordinate the presentation of reports to parents
  • To regularly survey students and monitor interests/concerns

Specific duties of a Year 7 Adviser in the preceding year

  • Liaise with and visit feeder schools [term 4]
  • Organise Orientation Day [term 4] and Day 1 [term 1]
