Year 7: Outline and Outcomes

Term 1

Peer Support
Students will

  • Receive smooth transition from Primary into high
  • Build friendships & networks to begin life in High School
  • Enhance self esteem
  • Understand Peer Mediation process
  • Identify bullying and strategies for overcoming
  • Become orientated to new environment
  • Build awareness of co-curricular participation
  • Be introduced to library facilities and resources
  • Participate in discussions and problem solving activities

Performance Coaching: Study Skills Time Management Exam Preparation
*(To be completed prior to half yearly exam period)
Students will

  • Examine how planning and organisation of time will assist in better achieving enhanced academic goals
  • Read, write and discuss strategies for improving focus, maximising potential, designing study routines and timetables, setting and reviewing performance targets, revision

Term 2

Introduction to Values Education – Core Module
Students will

  • Discuss, write and review individually and in small groups activities designed to introduce concepts such as : friendship, feelings, self-esteem, stress, communication and issues associated with our planet and how to care for it
  • Use log book / journal to respond to and record information covered in the course and to create personal memoirs

Bullies & Positive Action
Students will

  • Identify key features of bullying (eg. victims and perpetrators)
  • Express feelings about bullying
  • Explore the effects of bullying
  • Discuss and write using activities designed to explore the issues associated with bullying
  • Focus on empathy and positive action
  • Respond to a live performance which focuses on the issues associated with bullying

Term 3

Leadership Development
*(Teacher’s manual, student worksheets and weekly plan on Moodle)
Students will

  • Discuss and respond to activities which focus on the five core areas of leadership
    • Teamwork
    • Confidence
    • Responsibility
    • Organisation
    • Public Speaking
  • Work as part of a team to solve problems
  • Investigate leadership styles
  • Research well known leaders
  • Make short speeches about leadership
  • Discuss and participate in decision making process
  • Take on a leadership role in the school / community

  • Enhance communication skills
  • Discuss themes of friendship/ loneliness
  • Investigate and write about coping strategies
  • Practice problem solving strategies
  • Articulate feelings

Term 4

Performance Coaching Revision
Students will

  • Implement time management strategies
  • Develop strategies to improve exam performance by overcoming anxiety
  • Create a revision timetable and identify goals for improvement before the yearly exam period

Literacy Circles – teachers will students into library to complete the activities in this short unit of work (can be completed any time after Term 1)

Media Study (ACTF)
Lockie Leonard
Students will

  • View the opening episodes of Lockie Leonard and discuss and write about issues relating to change and transition
  • Answer review questions which focus on adolescent issues such as puberty, relationships, behaviour, family, adversity, healthy lifestyles etc.
  • Complete a selection of activities from accompanying CD-ROM - Resource for Teachers
  • Consider, discuss and write about aspects of film making and audience perspective
