Football is the most popular sport at Sydney Boys High School, with a range of teams available to suit all playing abilities. High competes in the AAGPS competition, the CIS and CHS Knockout competitions and the St. Andrews Cup and Kanga Cup tournaments.

Known as ‘The World Game’, football is far and away the biggest sport globally and it requires a unique balance of technique, effort and discipline. These attributes transfer off the pitch and into the classroom, with studies showing boys who commit to extra-curricular activities such as football are better prepared and disciplined for school work and the HSC.

The football program utilises some of the best training facilities in Sydney and in 2012, the school developed a partnership with the University of New South Wales to use the state of the art David Phillips Sports Fields which houses both an immaculate turf and a synthetic all-weather pitch for both training and match days.

Football also uses grounds in the Centennial Park precinct for training and matches.

Mr Matt Mulroney is the Master in Charge of the program and with Mr Mehdi Hazrati (1st XI) and Mr Ian Robinson (2nd XI) make up the senior coaching staff at High. Mehdi is currently undertaking his FFA A Licence and has coached and played at the highest level, both at home and overseas, representing Iran at the Olympic level as well as coaching 1st division teams and elite junior teams in the NSW State League. Ian holds his FFA senior licence and was in charge of the Maroubra ESFA Division 1 champions from 2009 to 2012. Matt is an Old Boy of Sydney Boys High, representing High in the 1st XI from 2001 to 2003 during which time he earned AAGPS and CIS representative honours. He has continued his playing career in the NSW State League as well as a 1 year stint overseas with Saltash United.

In 2013, High football formed a partnership with the elite coaching academy Mr Soccer, run by former Socceroo Mark Robinson. In conjunction with ambassadors Lucas Neill (Australia, Sydney FC) and Kyah Simon (Australia, Sydney FC, Boston Breakers), Mr Soccer offers some of the best football coaching for juniors in Sydney.

With well qualified coaches and a raft of experience, they will provide a tailored coaching program, specifically designed for your son’s ability with the main aims of improving his skill and enjoyment of the game.

As a member of the AAGPS competition, High competes in fixtures take place on Saturday mornings, either at our home grounds of David Phillips or Centennial Park, or hosted by the opposition school. Fixtures and ground locations will be posted on the website in the calendar section during the week – this is also the place to check for information about cancellations due to wet weather.

There are a number of ways for parents and supporters of High football to be involved in the program. The Football Committee meets once a month and is an excellent way to help shape the direction of the football program. It is staffed and run by parents for the purpose of improving all boys’ enjoyment of football at High. A major source of income for the football program is parking for sporting fixtures at the SCG and SFS. Volunteers are always welcome and award scheme points can be earned by boys who choose to help out.
