It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the website of the
Sydney Boys High School family. Established in 1883, our school is
proud of its great traditions and eminent alumni.
Our School Mission
Sydney Boys High School provides opportunity for boys to achieve
excellence in academic, cultural, sporting and civic endeavours, in an
environment conducive to learning, teaching and friendship.
Our School Vision: 2009-2011
Sydney Boys High aims to be a collaborative, equitable, learner centred community. We try to be innovative in dealing with issues and challenges in all areas of school life and work constantly to be responsive to student, staff, parent and community feedback. We are confident enough in our school to be accountable for the outcomes of its programs.
By 2011 our school aims to position itself as the leading boys school in all round education. Apart from academic skills, well rounded students need a range of intellectual, social and life skills to excel at university and in their future workplaces. To do this we plan to embed a school culture with a heightened engagement by students, staff and parents in the High Junior School and High Senior School programs. To enhance student well being we plan to refresh and expand the Student Welfare programs applicable to each of the schools.
Quality teachers have the greatest impact on student learning. During the next three years we plan to recruit, retain and train the best teaching staff available with the highest possible skills and provide them with the latest in information communication technology and targeted professional learning opportunities. Our goal is to improve the school’s network, facilities, equipment and professional practice to deliver leading edge learning to gifted boys.
The student learning environment has changed from a group learning to a personal learning emphasis. The internet is becoming the new classroom. Students are using mobile phones in innovative ways to communicate and create ICT products. Increasingly, they will interact globally to innovate, solve problems, communicate and collaborate with people from different cultures (global literacy).
In coming years, students will need additional employment related skills -
- Problem solving techniques
- Being able to work productively with others
- Demonstrating initiative, integrity and leadership
- Incorporating different perspectives and inter-cultural understanding into products
Teachers will be challenged to move from planning and delivering pedagogy for the group, to producing pedagogy tailored to the needs of individual students. Students will be able to access a broader curriculum through online learning and virtual classrooms. Students will be more involved in choosing what subjects or courses they attempt and what units, topics and assessment tasks they will complete. Assessment tasks will move away from content recall to focus on using and applying knowledge in new and complex situations. Students will be assessed in different modes, increasingly multimedia, interactive ones.
During the next three years, the High community will dedicate itself to embedding the NSW Quality Teaching Framework into its learning programs and to aligning our teachers’ professional practice with NSW Institute of Teaching standards.
