At the final of the Latin and Greek Reading Competition held last Friday, Nathaniel Jones (10F) won the Classical Greek competition. Congratulations!

Careers and Industry Afternoon

Last Friday, 12 Old boys and 150 students from Years 11 and 12 gathered in the Great Hall for a Careers and Industry afternoon. Organised by Marcus Borscz, Vice-Captain and Eric Wong (SHS-2000), the Old Boys shared stories of their careers and then answered a series of questions from students. Students gained great insights into how career paths change over time and how interests develop and are pursued across academic disciplines and industries. The Old Boys then networked with the students over afternoon tea. Thank you to all concerned. The event shows how relevant the Old boys Union is in providing a link between school and the world of work for our students.

Prefect Interns Elections Process

The Executive has considered the list of potential candidates for the Prefect Internship. Students who have been nominated may be vetoed for a number of reasons. An important prerequisite for School Prefect is acceptable academic progress. That means estimated ATAR of 92 for students who started in Year 7 (calculated on 12 units) and 88 for those who joined the school later. Strong, ongoing participation in the Student Award Scheme is the next benchmark to be met. We expect School Prefects to be role models for participation. Each year they should earn at least 100 points (even if they are carrying over points). By the time the ballot nominations close all students nominated should have demonstrated to Mr Dowdell how they will earn their 100 points this year towards an award. Boys who already have Platinum Awards, have until the closing date of the Award Scheme for the year to complete their 100 points requirement. In addition, nominees can be vetoed for recent acts of misbehaviour at the discretion of the executive or because of attendance and punctuality or school uniform issues. Boys who have not maintained the academic standard, but have been close to it,(ie one ATAR point below 92 or 88, depending on year of enrolment), have a right of appeal in writing to the Principal. They need to supply testimonials from at least three teachers, supporting their claims to have improved their academic standing since their first report, and assuring the Principal that the benchmark will be reached by April of their HSC year. Nominees successful in their appeals are automatically on probation until their Year 11 Preliminary reports. A further investigation of academic standings occurs at the beginning of term 4. Probationary Interns may lose their internship at this review. Prefect Interns who have slipped in their academic standings, will be placed on probation and given until their first Year 12 report to meet the standard required. I have heard multiple appeals. The ballot nominations have been closed. Ms Rigby is the Manager in Charge of School Prefects and is in charge of the nomination and voting process.

Collection of Reports

All boys should have collected their reports. Regrettably, there are still many boys who have not fulfilled their commitments, completed their Clearance Forms and booked an appointment time to see me to discuss their progress at school. This is an important step in our feedback loop and I insist on speaking to boys personally. Boys can come and get their reports before or after school and at lunch or recess on most days, unless I have appointments or have already set aside a time to chat with boys about their reports. There are also sheets provided for ‘Stragglers’ Reports’ for an hour or so on selected days on the Waterhouse desk in the corridor outside my office. Boys just need to make an effort to comply with policy and come and see me.

Once I have had a short feedback session with each boy, his report is loaded online against his personal file on Find a Student. Appointments can be made in the new school year by filling in one of the sheets on the Waterhouse desk in the corridor or just drop by before school, recess and at lunch (except Tuesdays). The benefits of my interactions with boys lessen if the discussion is too far removed from the assessment events being discussed.

Winter Sports Reports

It is that time again when captains of teams write up reports for their season. It is important that this tradition is maintained and that as many reports as possible appear in The Record. Ms May, our editor, works exceptionally hard to produce a high quality compendium of the great things that occur during the year here at High. She cannot do her job unless you do yours. For the sake of your teammates and for your own slice of history, complete and submit your report on winter sport in the week after the final match of your season. If you have access to any good action shots of your team send them in also. Parents are asked to remind their sons to submit their reports if they captained a team in winter sport.
