Brendan Nham, Aaron Ruan and Gorden Zhuang in Year 11, attended an Award Ceremony at Parliament House, for the Premiers Volunteer Recognition Program. They were awarded certificates in recognition of their extended efforts in volunteering. Congratulations, boys! Good luck to our teams on tour: basketball to Victoria for the Nationals (opens and Year 9s), volleyball (in Melbourne for the Nationals – multiple teams from Years 7 to 11) and the teams we are hosting for the annual Five Highs cricket competition.

The Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Program

The Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Program for students is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate young people who have given their time and energy for the benefit of others. There are three student categories: students up to Year 9 who have completed a minimum of 13 hours of volunteering in 3 months; students in Year 10 who have completed a minimum of 26 hours of volunteering in 6 months; students in Years 11 and 12 who have completed a minimum of 52 hours volunteering in 12 months. Students who complete their bronze, silver or gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards before 30 September in any given year are also eligible for recognition under the program. I am sure there are more of you out there who could qualify for recognition next year!

Exams and qualifications for Year 11 courses

Examinations are complete for Year 10. Year 10 mathematics students are vying for the 168 places on offer in the mathematics extension 1 course in Year 11, 2018. Entry is competitive. There will be no more than seven mathematics extension 1 and two 2-unit Preliminary classes in 2017.

Science students have to qualify to study two or three science courses in Year 11, 2017. Mr Kay makes the final decision in the light of a student’s record in Year 10 science. There will be restrictions on boys being allowed to enrol in all three sciences and in both physics and chemistry. Students wishing to do both physics and chemistry will require more proof of their overall academic capability, as evidence by their position on the academic rank order.

Interpreting Year 7 and 8 Reports Semester 2

Check your son’s progress in future oriented earning skills – problem solving, evaluating, working with others, communicating ideas, creating and innovating. They are reported twice each year in their own text box on the school reports. Every Faculty has an opportunity to report at least twice on each of the five ‘earning skills’ during the six reporting periods during Years 7-9. You can understand more deeply about how your son is building his capacity in the discrete dispositions that we have targeted for development as a school. The idea is that you can track your son’s growth over his three years in the Junior School. These PEWCC skills are very contextual. Hypothetically, your son might be really good at working with others in English where he is confident and comfortable but not so effective in mathematics where he is weaker, is reticent and defers to the strong mathematician in the work group. Consequently, skill growth might not be a simple progression from 1 in Year 7 to 3, 4, or 5 in Year 9 (depending on the scale in the rubric for each subject). Your son’s progress might be uniform neither across the subjects, nor across the dispositions. I look forward to an informed dialogue between parents and teachers on the individual student’s development of these important life skills. Weights Room for 2018

High’s weights room offers exceptional value for money. The room has appropriate equipment for preparing the bodies of teenage boys and crucially, it is constantly supervised. When handling weights, technique is vitally important and boys need to learn the correct way to lift. Kurt Rich, our Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, is a well-credentialed and experienced trainer. His presence ensures that the boys are training safely and sensibly. So as well as getting gym facilities, clients have a supervisor and adviser to help them during their unlimited visits. The Weights Room operates much more effectively if all boys get their training in how to use the various pieces of equipment and in proper lifting technique, as soon as possible. Kurt Rich provides this service at the beginning of each year and can tailor individual programs for members after the introductory sessions. Having a fixed clientele makes his job more productive and leads to a better training experience for members and better strength outcomes for participants. Hence, we decided to close off memberships by the end of February each year. Boys who have not paid by that time can no longer attend the weights room.

Costs for this service are held down to a minimum and reduced by boys taking out a full year’s membership. For 2018, a full year Weights Room membership costs just $246. Boys wishing to have full year membership must register and pay by Wednesday 28 February 2018. There will be no extensions of time nor any other window of opportunity later in the year if you forget to pay on time.
