From the Principal

Welcome Back

I trust all staff and students had a restful break. Welcome back to the hardest term of the year. We start the process of preparing assessment tasks, conducting examinations, marking student responses, collating marks, preparing reports, writing comments and discussing the contents with parents and students. Teachers and students are under a deal of stress during these examination and reporting periods but with the high level of collaboration that we enjoy here at High, a myriad of tasks are accomplished with everyone being civil with one another. The only staff change for this term is Mr Beringer (English) who will be teaching Mr Higgins’ classes this term.

Governors Centre Update

A final few details are being worked out with TKD (architects) and GHD (project managers) so that the project can have 100% drawings for the tender process which will commence next month if no further. The Governors Centre Ltd was successfully incorporated and an informal initial meeting of Directors was held. Some compliance issues need to be worked out, for example, Directors’ liability insurance. A formal first meeting of the eight Directors will be convened shortly. SGHS won the toss and nominated Quinn Sloan as Chairman of the Management Committee. Paul Almond (SHSOBU) was nominated as Company Secretary. The next stage in the process requires the Governors Centre Ltd to negotiate an agreement with DoE to enter into a lease or deed of licence over the land to develop the property, (with the DoE as Principal) and manage the activities occurring in the building over the course of the agreement. The precise terms of the arrangement with DoE are yet to be negotiated.

Wall of Gratitude – Buy-A-Brick Campaign

The next two months will be critical to the timing of the official start of the actual construction of the Governors Centre. We need to raise cash quickly! The Development Office has launched a campaign to sell 1,000 bricks at $1,000 each to build a wall within the GC development area. Each brick in the wall will have a name inscribed on it according to the donor’s requirements. The standard brick has two lines of text available. The wall of gratitude will be a permanent memento of your son’s time at the school or your family’s connection with it. I have bought my brick. When are you going to buy yours? Payment of Invoices – Thank You for Your Support

I would like to express my thanks to the hundreds of parents who went out of their way to pay their summer and winter co-payments and other invoices. The office was swamped with transactions to process in the last few days of last term and had 80 more to manage that came in during the holidays. Thanks to you all, we will have far fewer invoices to cancel and then re-enter into our new accounting system. This process commences as early as May. There will be quite a long period near the end of term during which we cannot process transactions at all. I encourage parents to continue to help out by settling their accounts early for summer and winter activities to avoid double handling in our accounts.

Cars Travelling On School Grounds   

Parents and visitors to the school are reminded that they must travel at a safe speed (10KMphr) whilst in the school grounds. When entering from Cleveland Street by Gate 2 they should park rear to the buildings or tennis courts.  Parents and visitors should not use the Anzac Parade entrances. Three-point turns in the bus bay area have posed serious risks to students walking beside the Great Hall and the buses or walking along the path next to the tennis courts and coming down the stairs. The bus bay area is not a drop-off point for students. Parents should drive in gate 1, drop off their sons and drive out gate 2, as per school policy. Please be vigilant in the interests of the safety of our boys!
