From the Principal
High Talent An historic victory for basketball was achieved when the Open Basketball
team defeated the best public high schools in the state, shutting out Westfields Sports High to
win the Shell Trophy. It was a great two days of coaching by Ben and Alex Hayman and a very
impressive, focussed and disciplined response from all the boys to execute the game plans so
perfectly. The win was even better because it was achieved without U17 Australian Forward Andrija
Dumovic who was in training on the Gold Coast. The team was also underprepared because two
players were returning from injury. The victory brought great credit to the team and the school.
The team was: Leo Gordon, Daniel Jones, Christian Jurlina, Craig Moller, David Nguyen, Emmett
Naar, Jeremy Rajendram, Joshua Sutton, Stepen Yoon and Jasper Garay. Congratulations to Antony
Paul (1st grade) and Sam Lane (2nd grade) for their selections in the Combined GPS Football
teams. Christopher Morrow (Year 11) was selected to play for NSW and Queensland in the Trans
Tasman Volleyball Match (unfortunately won by NZ). Congratulations, Chris!
Opening of the new science laboratories On Monday, June 28, the newly refurbished
science laboratories will be officially opened at 1030 in room 602. Penny Sharpe, MLC,
representing the Minister, will arrive at 1000 and will tour four of the new laboratories until
1030. After the official opening and unveiling of a commemorative plaque, morning tea will be
served in the MacDonald Wing library. Parents, Year Group representatives and staff members who
are free at that time are invited to join us to celebrate a very significant upgrade of
High’s learning environment.
Student Reports All students should have their reports. Parents should have
discussed these reports with their sons. Ask yours for his! Parent -Teacher evenings for Years 7,
10-12 have been held. The final evening for Years 8 and 9 is on Wednesday evening. These
occasions are important opportunities for us to become better partners in educating and
developing your sons.
Joint SBHS-SGHS P & C Meeting If you are a Year 8 or 9 parent, why not stay on
after your teacher interviews and hear what Michael Carr-Gregg has to say about teenage
development? The meeting and talk will commence at 7pm in the Great Hall.
End of Financial Year Giving Program If you want something other than capital
fundraising, sports or archives to donate to, what about considering our single scholarship
– the Phillip Day Memorial Scholarship Fund? You could help make a difference in the life
of a needy student, all rounder or serious athlete, either already at High or one coming to our
school. If the idea of doing something for the future interests you, go to www.sydneyboyshigh.com / donations / scholarship fund to read
more about the scholarship fund and how to donate towards it.
Faculty of Business and Economics - USyd There are exciting things happening in the
Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Sydney. The Bachelor of Commerce degree is
being revamped and clearly differentiated from the Bachelor of Economics degree. Innovative
approaches to course delivery are being undertaken. International experience at top notch
universities can be accessed during the courses. Students with an eye on global business
opportunities should make sure they have a good look at what is on offer at the University of
Sydney.

Parent Teacher Interviews
For Years 8 and 9 will take place on
Wednesday 30 June 2010
3.00pm – 6.30pm
Booking interviews with your son’s teachers This year we will again use a web
based electronic scheduling system for arranging interviews. This produces better results for all
participants, especially more compact time schedules for both parents and teachers. The system
works as follows –
- On Tuesday 22 June all parents of boys in Years 8 and 9 were sent by email details of the
scheduling system and a unique code to be entered at www.edval.com.au/book .
- This email was be sent to the address currently held by the school. If you did not receive
this email you should notify the school at
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
advising of this. Please indicate your son's name and roll class or date of birth so that the
information can be forwarded to you.
- On the Edval website you will see your son’s teachers listed and you will be able to
select those with whom you require an interview. At the same time you can indicate your
availability between 3:00 pm and 6:30 pm.
- Once the majority of parents have requested interviews, the overall schedule will be
generated by the school and your individual schedule should be available for you to download and
print from two days before the interviews.
- Boys from all Years will be dismissed from class at the conclusion of Period 5 on each day.
School Special buses will run to normal schedules and there will be supervision in the Junior
Quad of boys waiting for these buses.
-
Interviews should not exceed five minutes’ duration. If there is insufficient
time, a further appointment may be made for a later date, or contact by telephone arranged.
Global Leadership Convention
On the 11th of June, I and three other Sydney High students attended the World Vision Global
Leadership Convention at Sydney Olympic Park. The focus of the Convention was to raise awareness
about the Global Food Crisis and empower student leaders to take action. Throughout the day, we
heard talks, watched videos, and took part in brainstorming sessions and interactive activities
that made us consider the serious implications of the increasing world food prices that are
forcing an added 100 million people in the world into starvation. For me, the convention was a
real eye-opener and it was a very enriching experience. One of the ways we can help to resolve
the Global Food Crisis is to sign up for the 40 Hour Famine. Just go to the world vision website
and register.

full bore rifle competitions to be held at Bisley, Surrey. Leaving on 2nd July are :
Corporal Brendan Leo
Lance Corporal Dominic Tran
Cadet Adam Ceh
Cadet Dominic Tran

will be Team Coach.
The team will find time for some sightseeing including visits to London, Duxford and Portsmouth.
In order to be available for selection in the High teams at the GPS Rifle competition on 20-21
Jul, the cadet team will return to Sydney on Sunday 18th July.
A farewell reception will be held at the School on Thu 1 July at 6.30pm
Interestingly, High cadets and officers have been selected for every Australian cadet shooting
team to England since the first tour in 1911!
July Promotion Courses High cadets have been successful in obtaining places in the
NSW promotion courses to be held a Singleton during the July school holidays.
Preparing to take the first steps up the promotion ladder at the Junior Leaders Course will be :
Cadet Ken Li Cadet Matthew Zhang Cadet Ronald Tran
Corporal James Lee will be attending the Senior NCO course in preparation for Sergeant rank.
Our candidates for the Warrant Officer/Cadet Under Officer Course are:
Staff Sergeant Jin Nguyen Sergeant Andrew Gong Sergeant Alex Saunders
Good luck to our candidates !
AAC National Youth Conference Our Senior Under Officer, CUO Michael Do was
selected to attend the AAC National Youth Conference held in Sydney recently.
The two day conference was attended by senior officers from National Headquarters and selected
cadets from around the country.
Venue for the residential Conference was a city hotel, providing a welcome change from barracks
accommodation. The conference gave youth members an opportunity to hear visiting experts in youth
development speak of recent trends and ideas and allowed cadet members to provide feed back to
our national commanders.
New Uniform Boots Our cadets are now being issued with the new brown suede field
boot. Together with the Hi Shine patent leather ceremonial boot, there is little left for the
modern cadet to polish.
The old “spit & polish”, beloved of old time sergeant majors no longer forms part
of the modern cadet’s day.

Music Tour 2010 to France & Flanders Music Tour Photos and Videos are now
accessible to staff and students on the W Drive, Photo Archive, 2010, Music Tour 2010 (France
& Flanders). More photos will be added each week and we ask that any student / parent who
came on the Tour to please bring in their photos to the Music Staff to upload for everyone to
view.
A letter from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs in appreciation of our
involvement in the ANZAC Day Dawn service is included [in the PDF version of this issue of High
Notes]. All students involved worked very hard in the preparation leading up to the tour and
performed with excellence throughout the trip. Congratulations on your wonderful efforts and
representing Sydney Boys High so proudly at the ANZAC Day Dawn service.
Fromelles
Fromelles is a beautiful little town just outside of Ypres where we were staying on our Music
Tour. The small and spacious town maintains a history in the Battle of Fromelles where we would
provide a concert at the St Jean Baptiste Church for the people of the town. Before our
performance, we toured the memorial grounds and venues including a special WWI museum featuring
historical items collected by the curator himself in the battlefields. Many of the boys also had
the opportunity to see the new Australian cemetery being constructed, as a Frenchman in
Australian apparel explained that new bodies had just been discovered. Most of us were sure to
write down a few words of thanks in the public diary.
The concert in the Church began at 6pm with the whole set. All strings, concert band, stage band
and soloists performed. The highlight of the concert was the stage band, performing a sharp,
powerful and precise set of ‘Sydney By Night’, ‘Recycled Blues’ and
‘I Still Call Australia Home’ (featuring Christian Katsikaros). The response from the
crowd was electric, particularly after the trombone battle between Steve Cominos and Cameron
Morrison. The result was a unified applause, like that of a Sydney Boys High School Assembly,
allowing for a much welcomed encore.
The Mayor of Fromelles took plenty of time to thank us at the finish on behalf of the town
through the interpreter and invited us to a ‘light’ dinner where we were in fact fed
like kings (no one could finish dessert except for Edric). The bus ride back to Albert was spent
bursting out into chants for the whole hour. I have never seen such an elated group of people.
The memory of Fromelles will surely be cherished by all the boys and teachers.

Don’t miss next week’s presentation by Dr Michael Carr-Gregg on The Five
Greatest Challenges for Parents in 2010 - Wednesday 30th June in the Great Hall starting
at 7.00pm sharp. This is a fantastic opportunity for parents to hear from one of
Australia’s leading experts on adolescent behaviour. We urge parents to attend this P&C
sponsored presentation.
Barbara Taylor is organising supper for the evening and needs parents to help set up the supper
area near the Great Hall kitchen from 5.30pm on Wednesday 30th June. Please email Barbara

ON-Line P&C
Parent response to the ON-Line P&C initiative has been very supportive. For example:
“Most parents are at work … on-line P&C forum is much more suitable for parents
to participate in, comment & vote on proposals. It is great!”
We are seeking your feedback through ON-Line P&C on some of the issues raised by
parents. There is a facility in ON-Line P&C discussion to agree or disagree with posted
comments. We are asking parents to log-in and click on the thumbs up or thumbs down icons on the
top right of each posted comment or contribute to the discussion by posting your own comment. If
you do not have your log in details, email the P&C
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
with your son’s Year and we will
forward log-in details to you.
Issues raised by parents through ON-Line P&C include:
- “Access to this forum is fairly straight forward but I think the issue is to increase
parents’ awareness of the P&C forum, probably a short notice in High Notes to remind
parents to log onto the forum regularly (maybe once a week?), particularly, when there are
proposals that require voting … “
- “Is anybody else experiencing adverse effects of the laptop program? … I have a
number of concerns about it. It seems likely that the laptop has created a barrier to (my
son’s) education, rather than enhancing it “ read more ON-Line.
- “Lockers were supposedly being bought by the school...and now still I haven't heard
anything about them! My son really needs a locker with his heavy bag …” read more
ON-Line.
- “The problem at the school for staff work environment and students is graffiti, rubbish
and vandalism…”

Rowing Committee AGM
Date: Tuesday 27 July 2010
Venue: Staff Common Room
Time: 7.00pm
Come and find out about new developments for the upcoming season.
Rowing is a great sport that High provides for our boys. It also relies on parents to help
facilitate the program and, as with any sport, always needs new parents becoming involved.
All parents of rowing students are encouraged to attend the Annual General Meeting.
All Office Bearer positions will be declared vacant and available for nomination and election.
I hope you can attend and become involved in your son's sport.
Kind regards

Football - The Onion Bag
GPS season begins After an extended period of wet weather we were able to play our
first GPS match last Saturday at the King’s School. Played under bright blue skies, all but
4 of High’s 29 teams were hosted by King’s on grounds adjacent to each other which
helped to create a great football atmosphere. Results were highlighted by the 14A team securing
their first SHS victory, 4-1. Goals scored by Andrew He 3 and Jesse Cooper 1. Another strong
performance was by the 15As, winning 1-0, Jaan Pallandi scoring the winner there.
High’s 1st Grade team suffered a disappointing loss, 6-2 to a strong, well organised
King’s outfit. After a bright start with High taking the lead through a Jeremy Rajendram
goal, High failed to cope with King’s attacking raids. High’s inability to clear the
ball effectively from their 18 yard box enabled King’s to slot home several soft goals
which ended the contest. . A consolation goal to captain, Antony Paul, was the one shining light.
His individual effort, which started near the halfway line, beating several King’s
defenders with a weaving run into the box, where he calmly stroked to ball into the far corner,
was a goal of the highest order.
In the 2nd Grade match High fought back from conceding an early goal to earn their first points
of the season thanks to an equaliser from Siva Sooriakumar.

GPS Representatives Congratulations to Antony Paul (GPS 1st XI) and Sam Lane (GPS
2nd XI) for their selection in the combined GPS representative teams. They played CAS teams at
Newington College on Tuesday, with both contributing significantly to their teams’
victories.
Fixtures this weekend There are no matches this weekend as we enter the mid year
break. Our next GPS match is not until the first Saturday after the holidays, the 24th of July.
Quote of the Week ‘We deserved to win this game after hammering them 0-0 in
the first half.’ Kevin Keegan
Football Uniform Changes
Attention all SBHS Football players
Show HIGH SPIRIT by always wearing FULL football uniform when playing for your school.
The new SHS junior football strip is being phased in this year. All 13s teams are to wear the new
strip. All other teams are to wear the traditional strip. Under now circumstances should teams
take the field with a combination of both!
If boys need a traditional strip (no longer sold in the High Store), Anne Wall has a few that can
be obtained free of charge. Call Anne on 0423 172 762 for more details.
Note: All SHS football teams will wear the new strip next year.
Goalkeepers - if you do not have a school keeper's jersey, please see Mr Gifford.
Anyone with a school keeper's jersey who no longer requires one should return it to Mr Gifford
ASAP.
Tennis - Stan Jones Cup
On the 24th of May and the 7th of June, Sydney Boys High competed in the Stan Jones Cup. It is
the annual CHS tournament for school teams. Our team consisted of four players with Number 1
Arman Abdollahi, Number 2 Patrick Rynsaardt, Number 3 George Panas and Number 4 Lachlan Day. On
the first day we played in the first leg of the tournament which was a round robin. The teams we
were up against were Sylvania, Rose Bay and James Cook. We played a total of 18 sets and we won
17 of them 6-0, making small work of the other teams. The lowlight of the day was when Arman won
his singles match 6-1, dropping one game and ruining our whitewash streak. We came first in this
leg and progressed onto the quarterfinals.
We knew that the quarterfinals and semifinals would have similar results to those in the last
leg. This was true as we again whitewashed Gymea and almost whitewashed Kirrawee, only dropping a
single set. Although we had the easiest run to the finals, another team was doing equally well.
We met Endeavour Sports in the final with high hopes. We were off to a great start with our
Number 1 Doubles Pair Arman Abdollahi and Patrick Rysnaardt playing some outstanding doubles to
come away with a 7-5 win. This was the highlight of the final. The Number 2 Doubles Pair were
unlucky to come away with a loss. With rubbers tied at 1-all, there was tension between the two
teams as each team needed to win three singles matches to win. There was some hope when Number 2
George Panas fought back from 4-1 down but was unlucky to come away with a loss. Number 1 Arman
Abdollahi fought hard but was outplayed by a strong opponent. Number 2 Patrick Rynsaardt was
unlucky to lose against a solid opponent as was Number 4 Lachlan Day. Being runners-up in 2010,
we are looking forward to winning next year.
