From the Principal

Welcome back to term 3. Joy Lawson has returned to the SASS staff. Amanda Kaye is back from leave in English. John Dunne is relieving for Bronwyn Opferkuch while she is on maternity leave. Caroline White is relieving in the office for Betty Mourtzouhos until she gets back from Greece. Thereafter she will become our new School Archivist for two days per week, following the resignation of Suet Kumar. Diana Acuna is resuming her Technical/Library Assistant position in two weeks.

High Talent
Congratulations to Ivan Guo for his outstanding gold medal award at the Mathematics Olympiad held recently in Athens. This is a very significant achievement in terms of international academic competition. Good Luck to our boys competing at the state CHS cross country championships today: Paul Watzlaff, Nick Dimitropoulos, Jeremy Brown and Alisdair Brown. In the Australasian Schools English Competition, 425,000 participants sat the test in 2004. Twenty of our boys scored High Distinctions - well done indeed! The Combined GPS Rifle Team was announced last night. Our representatives are: Michael Li, Chris Budd and Tim Shu. Congratulations boys!

Amphitheatre completed
I am pleased to be able to announce that the stencilled concreting for the amphitheatre at the rear of the Canteen was laid during the holidays. This brings to completion a project conceived in 2000 to refurbish the Canteen and address the eyesore that was the corner of McDonald Wing. It feels good to be able to tick off a project after such a long time.

McDonald Wing Courtyard
Progress has been made with mosaic work, a water feature and a pod to mount a piece of Old Boy sculpture. The gardens will be groomed and planted by the spring.

Carpeting of rooms
We have finally had some new carpet laid in a number of areas. I hope that students will respect the carpet and school furniture purchased to make their student hours more comfortable.

AAGPS Rifle Shooting
Unfortunately, Shore cleaned up the competition with a consistent, quality display of marksmanship. High held their composure after a poor first afternoon to come second overall. I saw some great performances on Wednesday in the Buchanan Shield at 300m. Chris Budd shot 39/3 and 39 (7:1) out of a possible 40 in each stage. Tim Shu shot a possible 40.5 in the first stage and Josh Scharfegger a 39/1. Chris Lam showed maturity beyond his years to score 39 (7/1) in the snap. Ironically, it was a beautiful sunny afternoon with no breeze, considering the gale force weather of last week.

We had a busy first day back this term
All staff attended a 2-hour refresher course in Emergency Care Training. The new Child Protection Act and regulations were workshopped. The amended Excursion Policy was discussed and staff referred to tightened DET procedures on its website. Much of the day was strongly focussed on student welfare.

Caramello cup goes to 7M
The final of the Year 7 Wallarugby competition was held on Thursday 24th of June with 7M edging out 7R by the score of 17 - 0. The football played in the final was of a high standard as has been the case during the competition. .Possession was the name of the game as the windy conditions made handling very challenging. 7M's forwards paved the way for the victory, winning the majority of scrums that were put down, allowing the backs to use their pace. 7R never gave up. Their defence was well organised keeping 7M at bay for long periods. The sportsmanship displayed by both sides at the end of the final was very good to see.

Congratulations to all players who took part from every class.

Rowing Committee

The Annual General Meeting of the Rowing Committee will be held on Tuesday 3 August 2004 at 7:30 pm in the Staff Common Room (ground floor main building, turn left at main School entrance).

The Rowing Committee is a voluntary parent group which provides support for Sydney Boys High Rowing, principally in fund raising and the organisation of rowing camps, the Sydney High Regatta and other functions.

The purpose of the meeting is to review the Committee's 2003-2004 season, and to elect office bearers and allocate roles for the 2004-2005 season.

The continued existence of rowing as a sport at Sydney Boys High for the benefit of our sons depends upon the support of parents. The best way to give that support is to be part of the Committee, and participating is an enjoyable and rewarding way to help the boys and the School. It is always the right time for "new blood" on the Committee.

All rowing parents are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting.

Saturday August 7th from 5.30-6.30pm.

Port Macquarie Music Camp
Plans are well on their way. We have a full and exciting program for the bands who will be touring in August. SWE members need to bring in their permission notes this week.
We have four performances as well as rehearsals, tours and recreation.
Remember the boys will need to bring two white performance shirts and their full school uniform including blazer.
Uniform to wear on the bus is a school top (tracksuit, rugby, cricket etc.) and casual pants. Remember it will be quite cold in Port.
