In Years 7 and 8 students at Sydney Boys High School have a limited choice of which LOTE (Languages other than English) subjects they will partake in. Going into years 9 and 11, however, students have large choices to make. For Year 9, students must select three elective subjects to study for the next two years. For Year 11, they have to decide what subjects they will study for the Higher School Certificate.

The school holds information evenings for parents of students going in to years 9 and 11 to provide information about the choices they and their sons must make.
